What to know about the CS "China Doll" Recon Scouts for sale below (typically found in Collector Circles):
Collectors commonly call these "China Dolls"; they are fairly rare.
In 2007, the Cold Steel company set up a short-lived, transitional China production run, which represents a manufacturing transition point in Cold Steel history.
This short-lived SK5 import series created good quality blades made with steel which was imported from Japan. Performance depended on heat treatment in the Chinese factory. They were marked "Made in China" to be in compliance with legal requirements.
It is well known that China cloned Cold Steel blades (mainly the Trail Master's at that time); the cloned versions were marked "Made in the USA".
The guard is steel (not brass or stainless, as was found in the earlier versions).
Though there were not universal quality control issues, manufacturing was eventually moved to Taiwan, citing QC as a reason.
Our valuations are fair for the normal market. But, it is noted that collectors can pay higher prices on occasion, reaching $275 to $325. We are comfortable leaving our prices where they are.
